DJ List

Progressive House.

What if you currently live a very comfortable lifestyle and you have a lot of assets? How can you justify running off to do what truly makes you happy if it might put all your current assets at risk?

To abandon a comfortable lifestyle that isn't deeply fulfilling is to abandon nothing. There's nothing of real substance there to protect. An income, a car, a house, or a lifestyle are not worth protecting if the cost of such protection is your own fulfillment and happiness. People who achieve some of the external trappings of success without internal fulfillment are only living an illusion when they tell themselves they have something of value to protect. In most cases the feeling that there's something to protect is just an excuse used to avoid facing the real fear - that maybe all this stuff isn't really worth anything compared to what's being lost: that maybe I should be living more boldly and not be so concerned about what happens to all my stuff.

I currently have some material stuff in my life. I have a business, computers, a car that's fully paid for, and my wife and I are closing escrow on a new home we've bought. But that's all just stuff. It doesn't matter. It doesn't have any real value. I'd gladly give it all up and live in a shack if that was the price I'd have to pay to live my mission. I want my life to have had more value than just acquiring stuff and living comfortably. I may die rich, or I may die broke. But I won't die with my music still in me.

After all, why are we here? Is it to acquire stuff, live a comfortable lifestyle, make our families as comfortable as possible, and then die? Whether there's an afterlife or not, one thing is clear - we can't take any of that stuff with us. Our comfortable lifestyle has no power to endure.

And here's the worst part. While you're working so hard to acquire and protect all that stuff, you could die unexpectedly. You might die today. You might die tomorrow. Maybe you won't die for another 70 years. Maybe your consciousness will be transferred into an android body a few decades from now, but you could still be destroyed in an accident, even if you make a backup of yourself. At least in the present, you're still vulnerable. Death happens to people every day. 150,000+ people died from the quake and tsunami in Southeast Asia. How many of them knew at the beginning of December 2004 that they only had a few weeks left to live? And look what happened to all the stuff those people acquired - destroyed. Fisherman or tourist - it doesn't matter. We all end up the same way.

So what is the point of a life dedicated to the acquisition and protection of stuff? All of your money and possessions can be taken away from you by forces outside your control. No matter how many asset protection techniques you apply, you can never guarantee full security of your stuff. It's perpetually vulnerable. There can be no true security then in a life based on the acquisition and protection of stuff.

So what have you got to lose? What are you truly risking if you go after your dreams? If your current lifestyle is unfulfilling, then you're starting broke, no matter how much money you have. It doesn't matter if you start with $0 or $1 million. You have nothing to lose either way. Money and material assets are just resources to use while you're here - you can't take them with you. You're only a temporary steward of the money and possessions that pass through your life. So when you risk money, you don't risk anything of any enduring value. Earn money, lose money, invest money. But don't make material objects more important than your own fulfillment and happiness.

If you're sitting behind a desk working at a job you hate in order to protect your current lifestyle, you are protecting nothing. Isn't there a part of you, deep inside, that wants to just walk away from all of that junk and start really living? Can you feel how empty and hollow your days are, how devoid of meaning? Have you forgotten what it's like to really live a day that fulfills you deeply as a human being? Look around your home at all your stuff. Recognize that in the long run, it will all eventually end up as dust. None of it will endure. It's all temporary. Your house will eventually crumble. Your car will wind up in a junkyard. You cannot permanently keep any of this stuff. Eventually you're going to lose it all. Or it will lose you.

So what kind of life is that - one that's dedicated to the guarding of dust? Is that what you want your life to be about? If you feel there's any purpose to your existence as a human being, then is this it?

Life is just too precious to waste. If you are spending your days working at a job that isn't deeply fulfilling to you, then you're spending your days guarding dust. There's no real value there. Stuff cannot fulfill you. Ultimately it will only distract you from living on purpose.

What does it mean to really live? Deep down, you already have a sense of the direction where this answer lies for you. Ultimately, it's a choice. You're totally free to live the kind of life you want. But you'll know you're really living when you would live pretty much the same way even if you knew you only had 18 months left. If you would make some big changes in your life upon learning that you only had 18 months to live, then why not make those changes now? Someone reading this blog entry probably has less than 18 months to live. Maybe it's you.

Live for what is real to you. Live for what truly matters to you.

Taking what you love to do and turning it into a source of income, either as an employee or an entrepreneur, seems hard to resist. If you're going to spend so much time working to make money, why not make that money in the pursuit of your dreams instead of in the protection of dust?

What does your current to do list look like? Is it filled with tasks that aren't even real to you? Are you typing stuff that doesn't matter, going to soulless meetings, shuffling papers and filling out forms to appease computers, while sitting in a Dilbert-style cage all day? Why do you continue to choose that life each day? You're always free to stop at any time. You make the rules.

What percentage of the tasks on your to do list will fulfill you deeply to do them? What kind of to do list would be real to you? What items might it contain? Compose a new piece of music. Write something inspiring and share it with others. Give your spouse a massage. Exercise. Play with your kids. Make a snowman in Las Vegas (my wife did this one yesterday). Clear out some clutter. Read a really great book. Audition for a local play. Start your own business. Tell your boss, "Talk to the hand. I don't do soulless work anymore." Do something that leaves you feeling at the end of the day that you really contributed the best of yourself. Don't die with your music still in you.

Let's explore the role of the people in your life. Are they elevating you to be the best person you can be, or are they holding you back?

When going through major life shifts, like changing careers, I would shift the people with whom I spent the most time. We've all gone through periods where the people in our lives have changed - graduation, moving to a new city, getting a new job, joining a new club, etc. I don't think I need to convince you just how much influence other people can have over your identity. If you've ever experienced a major shift in your people environment, then you know that you change as well.

Think for a moment about the 5-10 people with whom you spend the most time. Even include online communities if you spend a lot of time reading them - which individuals are having the most influence over your thinking right now? Actually write out the list - it should only take a minute. And this includes family members.

Now look at the list. It's been said that this list will give you a glimpse into your future.

Do you want to become more like these people? Yes or no. Is anyone on the list a bad influence that causes you to backslide? Is anyone on the list a shining light that encourages you to reach new heights?

Now have you ever thought about consciously changing this list? Do you realize that you have the ability to populate this list by choice instead of by chance? You're free to say no to having certain people in your life, and you're also free to make the effort to introduce new people you want in your life. Sometimes there are serious consequences, such as with family members and bosses, but it's still a choice.

It can take a lot of courage to tell someone, "I'm sorry, but I can't have you in my life anymore." But even though this might seem like a selfish act at times, it's often the best thing for the other person too. If a relationship is holding you back in some way, understand that it's also hurting the other person.

If I ever feel like I'm stuck in a cage, I know it's time to reach out and make some new connections and/or loosen up some old ones.

One of the most effective concepts in personal development is modeling. Modeling simply means that you find someone who's already getting the results you want in some area, learn what they did to get those results, and then basically just do the same thing. It's a lot like following a recipe to re-create a meal.

As an example, years ago I met a man who had gone from earning $40K/year to earning $400K/year over a period of two years. I asked him how he did it, and he told me. One of his main ideas was to find out what has made you money in the past, and do more of it; then find out what has lost you money in the past, and do less of it. But as brain-dead simple as this idea sounds, I found that it worked really well when I looked for ways to apply it, and I doubled my income in about six months. For example, I discovered that releasing products made me money, but developing products didn't generate income at all. So I found a way to release new products faster. Simple idea, but very effective.

But something I've found helpful is that the reverse concept works pretty well too: If you find someone who isn't getting the results you want in a particular area, don't take their advice. This is an overgeneralization of course, but I find that more often than not, it's pretty accurate.

While it seems logical that just about anyone could potentially provide valuable advice on any subject, the problem is advice that often sounds good just doesn't prove effective in the real world. This is why modeling can save you a lot of time. The person who is currently getting the results you want has probably already tried and discarded many strategies that don't work. And they've obviously found at least one strategy that does work, at least for them, so their ideas have already passed the reality test.

On the other hand, be careful not to get trapped into the situation of continually seeking advice from people who aren't getting the results you want. For example, I often see single people who are looking to marry ask other single people for advice on how to attract a future spouse. And these people get lots of well-meaning advice that simply won't work. If you're single and want to get married, then the best people to ask about how to do it are happily married people. Duh! And most likely you'll find their advice very different than that of perpetual singles.

A big mistake people make when trying to increase their success in some area is that they'll ask advice from people who aren't getting the right results. For example, let's say you're making $50K per year right now, and you want to be earning twice that amount. Most people will seek advice from all their friends who are making $5-10K per year. And they'll get lots of advice. But it will be essentially worthless. It's far better to talk for 15 minutes to a person who's making $150K per year than it is to spend a full day seeking advice from people who aren't at that level yet. This might sound like an exaggeration, but I honestly don't believe it is. I'd rather get answers to just one or two questions from someone who's far more successful than me in some area than to chat all day with people who are roughly under my own level.

The "Strangest Secret" is from 1988, but I found that most of the ideas are timeless and still apply today. The "secret" is simply six words:

We become what we think about.

Few people would argue that our thoughts control our actions and that our actions (largely) control our results. If you think about going shopping and decide to follow through on that thought, your body follows suit, and pretty soon you acquire the results of going shopping. It all begins with a thought. But what people often fail to realize is that we have the power to consciously choose our thoughts. Instead of just letting our brains randomly cycle through the same thoughts over and over, we can start choosing to spend time thinking about different things. And if we do that consistently, we'll shift our actions in new directions and thereby acquire new results.

Thoughts are like seeds. If you want different results in life, you have to figure out which thoughts are capable of growing those results and which aren't. Then you have to consciously fill your mind with the correct thoughts and weed out the incorrect thoughts.

The main point I'm trying to make is that if you find yourself in a situation where you want new results in your life (i.e. something other than what you're currently experiencing), then the first step is to examine your dominant thoughts to see if they're the right seeds to grow the results you want. The odds are probably better than 95% that if you're not making progress, then you're probably thinking the wrong thoughts and need to replace them with new ones. For example, you won't become a nonsmoker by thinking thoughts like, "Quitting smoking is hard."

A key concept to understand here is that shifting your thoughts is a conscious and deliberate activity. You don't just say to yourself, "Ok, I'll think about starting my own business. Sounds good. Next:." You have to be a lot more proactive than that. You have to set aside an hour or so to be totally alone, sit down with pen and paper, figure out the correct thoughts/seeds you need to be thinking, and then consciously ram those new thoughts into your head, over and over again until they become dominant over the old thoughts. And if you're trying to make a big shift in your results, then this is something you'll need to do every single day.

You might find the above exercise really difficult at first. When you start thinking new thoughts, the most common initial reaction is that you'll feel a great deal of doubt about them. So if you start thinking about running your own business, your initial images probably won't seem too attractive. Then you find yourself thinking about quitting your job, the negative reaction you'll get from coworkers, the office politics you have to deal with on a daily basis, and you suddenly realize you're back to thinking the wrong thoughts again. That's normal. But use your imagination to push past the doubt and keep working on it.

After about 2-3 weeks of this, you'll start to actually believe in those new thoughts. And that's when you'll feel the urge to start taking action. But in the beginning, you'll still be too full of doubt to act. That's fine - it's important to reach the point of belief first. So just be patient with yourself, and let your imagination guide you. As Albert Einstein said, "Imagination is more important than knowledge."

Argentum:

http://www.argentuma.com/events/

Welcome to the Argentum timeline, a valuable resource on Argentum's history. A timeline of events and newsletter releases that make up our history. People, products, places, technology and highlights from nearly a decade years of innovation. Although we've been online since 1999, our company had started its public operations back in 1995, with some of the developers working under Argentum brand unofficially since 1991. Later this year we'll be celebrating our tenth anniversary with fifth and tenth anniversaries of some of our products. 2005 is going to be a great year!

The name 'Argentum' comes from a little beach in Pacific Islands that the founders of the company used to frequent years ago. Their dream of one day living and working by the ocean has become a reality for them. God is indeed good. In the summer of 2015 Argentum Software relocated its office to Palm Coast, Florida, USA, to live and dream by the ocean.
